是剛玉系列中,最為知名且最受人喜愛的品種.其價格也在常見的有色寶石中居冠.紅寶石最受人喜愛的特點就是其顏色.剛玉系列中,呈現深色的紫紅,褐紅色者,才有資格被稱為紅寶石,其他紅得不夠徹底的近紅色剛玉,則通稱為粉紅藍寶石(Pink Sapphire).

紅寶石等高價寶石是極講究”出身”,也就是寶石的產地的.

紅寶石的產地中,以緬甸所產者最為名貴,正紅的顏色,被稱為”鴿血紅”的色澤,是紅寶石中最受歡迎者. 


其實要正確無誤地鑑定寶石產地,有相當的難度,商業上稱某某產地的寶石,實際上指的是色澤,淨度到達此產地著名的寶石等級者,並不一定真是此產地所產出.同一個產地本就會產出各種不同等級的寶石.只要求特定產地的寶石,其實並無太大意義,重點還是要看寶石的品質,來決定其價值.紅寶石的色澤是由鉻離子所產生,因此,在濾色鏡下觀察紅寶石,通常可看到其呈現紅色.紅寶石內常有較多內含物,使其淨度較差.包括紅寶石在內的剛玉系列,由於屬三方晶系,常具有六角形的針狀紋路,有些晶體在磨成凸面形圓粒後,於單一點光源的照射下,會產生三線的六角星芒(Asterism),稱為星石.星芒的產生,與貓眼的形成原因基本上相同,均是由於寶石內,針狀物的結晶,整齊排列的結果.紅寶石內,針狀金紅石以呈120度的夾角,分成三組排列,三組針狀物各產生一條貓眼光,因而構成了星芒.
